Malé is the capital and larges city of Maledives. It is located at southern edge of Mart Malé Atoll. The whole Republic of Maledives  is named after the capital. The word "Maledives" means "The island(dives) of Malé. Malé was traditionally the King's Island, from where the ancient Maldive Royal dynasties ruled and where the palace was located.
